Baduci (a.k.a. Badeucy or Badeudcey) is a relatively rare poker variant that is slowly picking up speed in the poker community. As such, you’ll be hard pressed to find any good Baduci Poker Strategy pages online – until now, that is. Learning badugi poker strategy will help improve your skills at baduci. These games go hand in hand with only a few differences so if you are good at one you should be good at the other.
In this article, we’ll detail for you what we’ve found to be the most successful Baduci poker strategy.
Baduci is actually two Lowball poker games mixed into one – Badugi and 2-7 Triple Draw. Much like a Hi/Lo poker game, the winner of each type of hand – Badugi and 2-7 TD – splits the pot. Because you are competing for two halves of a single pot, the Baduci poker strategy becomes much more complex than a typical Badugi or 2-7 TD strategy.
Luckily, the winning requirements for both Badugi and 2-7 Triple Draw are quite similar, with a few exceptions. In both games, you are trying to develop the lowest possible hand with no pairs. In Badugi, however, Aces are low, Straights don’t count against you, and none of the 4 cards used can be of the same suit. 2-7 TD requires all 5 cards to be used, with Aces high and Straights counted.
The object of any split-pot poker strategy is to scoop the entire pot. Winning half of the pot is good, but not nearly as profitable as scooping. Therefore, the best Baduci hand would actually be the same as the best 2-7 Triple Draw hand: 2-3-4-5-7. A hand of A-2-3-4-? would also be good, but does not fulfill the optimal objective of a winning Baduci strategy. Then again, it is extremely important to keep your chip stack on the rise, so we will provide two sections to this Baduci Poker Strategy…
* Winning Half of the Pot
* Scooping the Pot
…but first, we’ll cover Starting Hands and how handle an Ace.
The first thing you’ll need to decide is whether to Fold or move on. If you’re in Big Blind position and none Raise, obviously you’ll get to move on regardless. Otherwise…
A Starting Hand should contain at least 2 premium cards. Premium cards in Baduci would be 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7. The following is considered a good Starting Hand in Baduci.
* 2 or more cards valued 2-7, off-suit
* Otherwise, Fold.
A big question that arises in Baduci is what to do with an Ace. If your hand has at least three cards 7 or below, including an Ace – keep the Ace and build on a strong Badugi hand. Otherwise, drop the Ace and keep the other two or more low cards.
In order to keep the profits rolling in, you must be able to win at least one of the two hands. If, by the end of the second draw phase, you are one card away from having a great 2-7 Triple Draw or Badugi hand, move on. Otherwise, Fold.
This is the ultimate goal of any Baduci strategy. By taking only half of the pot on the hands you do win, your chip stack is going to rise slowly. Losing a few Blinds can put you right back where you were before the win. To scoop the pot, you’re going to need an awesome hand of 2-3-4-5-7 – the perfect 2-7 Triple Draw – with only two of those cards matching suits (preferably the 5-7). You are still susceptible to any A-7 Badugi hand, but it ensures at least half of the pot, and most often the scoop.
It requires a very tight Baduci strategy to scoop the pot often, so stick to your optimal starting hands, which means you’ll be Folding at least 90% of the time. The hardest part of following strict a Baduci strategy is to maintain the patience and discipline required to play a tight game. If you can keep from getting bored and making impatient mistakes, you can turn this Baduci poker strategy into a very profitable pastime.
